The Media Is Dead?

Well if 2018 wasn’t already off to a bad start with President Trump announcing his “Button is bigger and better and works” then strap yourselves into your seats American Gods lovers because this year just got worse. Last year brought the devastating news for fans like myself that the visionary American Gods show-runners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were leaving and possibly even Kristin Chenoweth, a.k.a. Easter and now the list continues to grow as Gillian Anderson announces her exits from the show. That’s right people we’re losing the media.

If ever there was a time that we needed the Gods to send us a miracle now would be it, both Kristin and Gillian have indicated its Bryan and Michaels exit last year that ultimately aided in their decision-making. Anderson spoke out to LA times stating – that she “will not be appearing again as the new god Media in the second season of American Gods on Starz. Anderson says the departure of show runners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green means she will not return to the show.” As well as Kristin last year stating that – “When Bryan was the show-runner, I was coming back for several episodes, but I don’t know now,” Chenoweth explained to Variety. “It depends on who it is and if they think I add value or not.”

So what does this mean for our beloved show? It means we need a ‘godly miracle’ to keep the show alive. As the bigger name stars start exiting it has the potential to spook some of the other actors/actresses and of course the fans.
Kristin’s role as Easter had an undeniable impact on the structure of the series; with the finale of season one closing on the Old God Easter revealing her true colours and power to the new gods setting up the war which we had all been waiting for. To try and recast or even remove her from the series would have a serious impact on the structure to season two. As for Gillian, being the Media and her ever so changing faces it might be a little easier to recast her however it would be a total loss for the show’s creative talents.

Let us know what you think about this news —Do you think the show can continue on without Anderson and Chenoweth? Can they be recast?  To stay updated with all things American Gods you can subscribe to our mailing list and get notified when new articles come out.
